Sustainable buildings and infrastructure should minimise the use of precious resources, but should also deliver flexibility, durability, usability and financial viability. We believe in simple, smart and integrated design solutions which deliver in-use.

ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN

We can provide advice at the masterplan stage and develop concept and detailed energy and sustainability strategies for new and refurbished buildings.

We adopt a “passive first” approach where the aim is to maximize the use of free energy sources  through massing, envelope and intelligent building layout. Only then do we look at integrating low carbon, energy efficient building services including efficient lighting, heating, cooling and renewable power. Our solutions are tailored to work seamlessly with the building’s aesthetics, respond to the occupants' needs and ensure best financial value.

Our strategies are based on simple principles which are tested with sophisticated building physics design tools including Dynamic Thermal Modelling and Computational Fluid Dynamics.

Our services include;

  • Masterplanning
  • Microclimate analysis
  • Passive building design
  • Lighting strategies
  • Low and zero carbon strategies
  • Indoor environment: design for daylight, thermal comfort and air quality
  • Financial and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)
  • Portfolio retrofit strategies
  • Materials specification
  • Water efficiency

Planning, compliance & certification

The ever shifting landscape of energy and sustainability policy and regulation can often seem daunting. We work as an integral member of the design team to ensure that the development achieves the relevant targets and standards whilst focusing on the client’s unique requirements.

We understand that environmental certification can often be seen as a ‘box ticking’ exercise with limited benefit. Our qualified BREEAM, Code for Sustainable Homes, LEED and Ska assessors are experienced in advising on the most suitable measures from the early design stages through to final certification to ensure maximum value.

Our services include;

  • Planning support
  • Building regulation Part L compliance
  • BREEAM, LEED, Code & SKA certification
  • Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs)

Commissioning & Post Occupancy Support

The way in which a building is operated can have a large impact on the in-use energy and environmental performance. This affects both new buildings, where commissioning and post-handover support is essential, but also existing buildings where fine tuning of existing systems can often significantly reduce energy bills and improve the indoor environment at minimal cost.

Our services include;

  • Integration and management of ‘Soft Landings’ frameworks

  • Post occupancy energy surveys

  • Building log books and user guides

  • Green incentives – option studies

  • Commissioning and post occupancy support

  • Behavioural change programmes
